A Review — Chicago

Shokran

A vibrant corner of North Africa in Chicago. The Lamb Fez is a masterclass in slow-cooked perfection.

Shokran promises a true culinary escape — slow-simmered tagines, fluffy couscous, perfectly grilled meats. The room is filled with the rich aromas of cumin, saffron, and cinnamon. We came to test whether the food matches the warmth of the welcome.

Chicken Bastilla

Of all the dishes on the menu, the Chicken Bastilla is an absolute must-try. The first thing you'll notice is the incredible texture of the phyllo pastry, expertly baked to be super crisp and flaky.

Inside, the savory chicken filling is a revelation — wonderful texture and packed with major, aromatic flavors. What makes this dish so unique is the delicate balance of sweet and savory: dusted with granulated sugar that, surprisingly, works in perfect harmony with the rest of the ingredients. A sprinkle of cinnamon on top adds another distinct flavor profile, beautifully complementing the sweetness. I 100% recommend it.

Lamb Fez

The Lamb Fez, a classic Lamb Tagine, is a masterclass in slow-cooked perfection. Some of the best Moroccan food I've had in a while.

The absolute star is the lamb shank. Contrary to what one might expect from a dish with fruit, the lamb itself is deeply savory and flavorful, not sweet. It is cooked so perfectly that it's super tender, literally falling off the bone with the gentlest touch. The sweetness and a delightful crunch are introduced by the thoughtful addition of prunes and almonds, creating a beautiful balance of flavors and textures.

To get the full experience, ordering a side of rice pilaf or couscous is highly recommended to soak up every last bit of the delicious sauce. While the accompanying pita was a bit dry, it hardly detracts from the main event.

Beverage

Moroccan Mint Tea

No Moroccan meal is complete without their classic Moroccan Mint Tea, and Shokran serves a perfect cup. It's prepared with a delicate touch, offering just a slight sweetness that allows the vibrant, fresh mint flavor to truly shine.

This isn't just a beverage; it's a truly refreshing experience. The tea acts as a wonderful palate cleanser, cutting through the richness of the tagines and complementing the meal beautifully.
