A Review — New York

Minetta Tavern

An iconic 1937 institution where the Black Label Burger and Roasted Bone Marrow earn their legendary reputations.

Minetta Tavern was once a watering hole for Hemingway and E.E. Cummings. Today, under restaurateur Keith McNally, it retains its old-school charm while serving some of the city's most celebrated French-American dishes. We came specifically for the Black Label Burger. We left thinking about the bone marrow.

Hors d'oeuvre

Roasted Bone Marrow

If there is one dish you must order, it's the Roasted Bone Marrow. This appetizer is sheer perfection on a plate — a super flavorful experience where every single element works in perfect harmony.

The bone marrow is, without a doubt, the star — incredibly rich and decadent. It's served with baguette soldiers that have the perfect level of crispness, creating a fantastic textural contrast for the smooth, unctuous marrow.

But what truly elevates the dish is the shallot confit. Simmered in a red wine reduction, it adds a slight, beautiful sweetness that expertly cuts through the richness of the bone marrow. The way the savory marrow and the sweet confit work together... there are almost no words to describe how good it is. The kind of dish I could eat all day.

Entrée

Black Label Burger

This burger is, in a word, terrific. It's easily one of the best burgers in the city, right up there with legends like Au Cheval. This is perfection in burger form.

The star is the prime dry-aged beef patty. It arrived with a magnificent medium-rare temperature that was perfectly consistent throughout. The meat itself was incredibly juicy and well-seasoned, delivering a deep, beefy flavor.

What makes it remarkable is how every component works in unison. The sweet caramelized onions and the perfectly melted cheese enhance the beef without overpowering it. Even the pickle on the side is super flavorful. Served with a side of crispy pommes frites (which could have used more seasoning), this is exactly what a great burger should be.

Dessert

Chocolate Soufflé for Two

The Chocolate Soufflé for two is the ideal way to cap off the meal and is probably the best dessert on the menu. It manages to be super chocolaty while remaining incredibly light. It hits a perfect balance, offering a deep chocolate flavor that is neither too sweet nor too bitter.

What makes it so enjoyable is that super light texture; the cake just melts in your mouth, making it easy to finish even after a big dinner. As the name promises, the portion is definitely good enough to share. It comes with a scoop of salted caramel ice cream — while the ice cream is good, the soufflé is the real star and is so good on its own that the ice cream could almost be avoided.

From the Bar

Liquid Notes

Order

Aviation

Good and refreshing — gin and creme de violette come through clearly. Alcohol not too overpowering, with a slight aftertaste of lime. Note: the Maraschino liqueur was a bit lost among the other components.

Order

Farmacia

Refreshing, alcohol-forward mezcal cocktail. Real smokiness from the mezcal and spice from the ginger. Despite including honey, not a sweet drink — a subtle hint of bitters comes through. Solid mezcal option.
