A Review — Miami

Mandolin Aegean Bistro

A restored 1940s house in Miami's Design District serves coastal Greek and Turkish cuisine. The Manti Dumplings are the silent star.

Mandolin Aegean Bistro promises a transportive dining experience to the coastal towns of Greece and Turkey. The picturesque blue-and-white courtyard is enough to win over most visitors before they read the menu. We came hungry — and skeptical of beautiful rooms that overshadow ordinary kitchens.

Tuna Crudo

As a fan of fresh, simple starters, the Tuna Crudo immediately caught my eye. The dish, featuring green chili, capers, and fennel pollen, proved to be an excellent choice for a light and flavorful mezze.

The first thing I noticed was the cut of the fish. Instead of the paper-thin slices you often find in crudo, this tuna was served in satisfyingly thick cuts. This gave the dish a wonderful, meaty texture that was a refreshing change of pace.

From the very first bite, the tuna was incredibly flavorful — seasoned perfectly, allowing the quality of the fish to shine through. The complete absence of any "fishy" taste was a great sign of freshness. The lemon juice and capers provided a bright, briny acidity that cut through the richness beautifully.

My only slight critique is that I couldn't really detect the flavor of the green chilies. Despite that minor point, this is a standout dish — a high bar for the courses to follow.

Grilled Octopus

Following the impressive Tuna Crudo, I was eager to try another classic Mediterranean dish: the Grilled Octopus. While cooked beautifully, it left me with a slightly mixed impression.

The octopus itself was undeniably well-prepared — incredibly tender and packed with a smoky, grilled flavor. A squeeze of fresh lemon juice did wonders, elevating the octopus's natural sweetness and adding much-needed brightness.

However, where the dish fell short was in its overall composition. The flavor, while pleasant, became somewhat monotonous after a few bites. I found myself wishing for accompaniments to add variety and contrast — a flavorful sauce, perhaps a vibrant herb-based dressing, or even some simple grilled vegetables. With those additions, this could easily become a must-order.

Manti Dumplings

While Mandolin is known for its fresh seafood, the Manti Dumplings proved to be the silent star of the menu. This dish is an absolute triumph of flavor and texture that should not be missed.

The dumplings themselves are incredibly tender, filled with delicately minced beef that practically melts in your mouth. They are generously coated in a rich and creamy garlic yogurt, which provides the perfect amount of tanginess to cut through the richness of the meat and burnt butter.

What makes this dish so remarkable is how all the elements work in perfect harmony. Each bite is a complex mouthful of different flavors — the savory beef, the tangy yogurt, the nutty burnt butter, and a final, subtle kick of heat from the Aleppo pepper. It feels both comforting and sophisticated. One of those dishes you'll be thinking about long after you've left the restaurant.

Dessert

Honey Pie

To round off the meal, I opted for the Honey Pie, served with fresh strawberries and homemade whipped cream. It turned out to be a light, elegant, and almost perfect end to the dining experience.

The dessert is a beautiful composition of three simple elements. The house-made whipped cream is exceptionally good — so light and fresh that it easily rivals a scoop of classic vanilla ice cream. The fresh strawberries add a vibrant splash of color and a welcome touch of tangy brightness.

However, the undeniable star is the honey pie itself. It delivers a strong, familiar, and pleasant taste of honey without being overly sweet. The pie is wonderfully light, and what makes it particularly interesting is its texture — unlike traditional pies, the crust and base are soft rather than crispy, which works surprisingly well here. A great choice for anyone looking for a sweet treat that is satisfying but not heavy.

Honestly Speaking

Order the Manti Dumplings — the silent star. The Tuna Crudo is the right way to begin. The grilled octopus needs more than itself to stand out.
