A Review — New York

Charlie Bird

A SoHo institution where modern Italian-American cooking and 90s hip-hop somehow work in perfect harmony. The off-menu Cacio e Pepe is essential.

Charlie Bird blends a relaxed, stylish atmosphere with a sophisticated menu rooted in seasonal ingredients. The room is alive with a curated 90s hip-hop and jazz playlist; the crowd is fashionable. But the question, as always, is the food. Here is what the plates told us.

Appetizer

Blue Fin Tuna Crudo

The Blue Fin Tuna Crudo proved to be an excellent choice. Right away, the dish stands out with its presentation; instead of the paper-thin slices one might expect, the tuna is served in satisfyingly thick cuts, promising a more substantial bite.

Each piece was perfectly seasoned and teeming with flavor. The accompanying brown butter was a brilliant touch, its nutty richness complementing the fresh, clean taste of the fish beautifully. What truly took the dish to the next level, however, was the preserved lemon — its bright, zesty notes elevated the flavor of the tuna, creating a perfectly balanced and sophisticated profile. The salty pop from the capers was another welcome addition.

Entrée

Spaghetti Cacio e Pepe (off menu)

While not listed on the menu, the Spaghetti Cacio e Pepe is an absolute must-order and arguably one of the best dishes the restaurant has to offer. From the very first bite, you're greeted with a rich, cheesy flavor that is both comforting and incredibly satisfying.

The pasta itself is cooked to a perfect al dente. What sets this version apart is the addition of chili crisps, which introduce a subtle, welcome heat that cuts through the richness of the cheese. The balance of cheese and pepper is executed flawlessly, with neither overpowering the other.

It's a simple dish, but it's done the right way, showcasing how a few quality ingredients can create something truly exceptional. If you are visiting, you absolutely must ask for this off-menu gem.

Dessert

Warm Chocolate Budino

Ending the meal on a high note, the Warm Chocolate Budino is another smashing hit. This dessert is a masterclass in texture and taste, bringing together a warm chocolate cake, luscious chocolate sauce, phenomenal olive oil gelato, and a delightful crunch from caramelized rice crispies.

Each component is fantastic on its own, but together, they create something truly special. The elements work in perfect unison: the rich sweetness of the chocolate, the subtle tanginess and smooth perfection of the gelato, and the satisfying crispiness of the rice crispies. Subtle touches, like a sprinkle of sea salt on the cake, add a surprising texture and elevate the flavors even further.

From the Bar

Liquid Notes

6th Av Soda

Light and refreshing mix of vodka, Bénédictine, Palo Cortado sherry, and soda. Vodka imperceptible, with a subtle hint of the Bénédictine herbal liqueur. Wish the drink had a bit more flavor to make it truly memorable.

Order

PSL Daiquiri

A more complex concoction — rum, espresso, allspice, and citrus. Allspice and espresso are prominent, creating a spicy, aromatic take on a traditional espresso martini. A great choice for anyone who enjoys a sophisticated, layered drink.
