A Review — New York

Au Cheval

The famed Chicago burger joint comes to New York. The hype, deconstructed — one bite at a time.

Au Cheval arrived in New York carrying the considerable weight of its Chicago reputation — a reputation built almost entirely on a burger. The question, then, isn't whether the food is good. It's whether it lives up to the years of reverence. We came hungry, and we came skeptical. Here is what the plates told us.

General Jane's Honey Fried Chicken

If you're in the mood for a delightful twist on a classic, General Jane's Honey Fried Chicken delivers. From the very first bite, this dish makes an impression. The chicken arrives wonderfully crunchy, clearly drenched in a silky honey sauce.

What truly stands out is the consistency of the flavor. Each piece offers that familiar, comforting taste of perfectly cooked fried chicken, but it's beautifully complemented by the sauce. You can distinctly taste the sweetness of the honey, which is skillfully balanced with a subtle hint of chili.

My only minor wish would be for a bit more spiciness in the sauce. Overall, this is a delicious and well-executed dish — definitely worth trying.

Double Cheese Burger with Fried Eggs

Prepare your taste buds for a truly heavenly experience with the Double Cheese Burger with Fried Eggs. From the very first bite, this burger explodes with super flavorful notes that immediately let you know you're in for something special.

The core of this culinary delight is a juicy burger patty, expertly seasoned and cooked to a perfect medium rare. The meat is tender and rich, delivering on every promise of a quality burger. What truly sets this dish apart, however, is the ingenious addition of the fried egg. It elevates the burger to another level, making a world of difference in texture and richness.

This isn't just a good burger; it's easily one of the best burgers to try in New York City. The consistency is remarkable; every bite maintains the same incredible flavor profile, leaving you constantly wanting another. And fear not the dreaded soggy bun — this burger's bread holds up perfectly, even after a few minutes.

While the accompanying garlic aioli is good, you might find yourself so engrossed in the burger's perfection that you can probably skip the fries.

Dessert

Mille-Feuille

This one left me with mixed feelings. From the first bite, I found it to be not too sweet, which is a positive for those who prefer less sugary treats. However, it was also a bit underwhelming, failing to live up to the considerable hype from others.

The pastry cream within the layers, while commendably consistent in texture, unfortunately lacked any complex flavor profile. It was perfectly smooth but didn't offer the rich, nuanced taste one hopes for in such a central component. On a brighter note, the puff pastry itself was quite good — baked to the right level, achieving that delicate crispness that shatters beautifully with each forkful.

I believe that adding a layer of thin-sliced fruits between the cream and pastry could introduce much-needed freshness and a contrasting texture.

Mezcal Penicillin

Certainly lives up to the reputation. Very mezcal-forward, but worth it.

Frozen Espresso Martini

You can taste the slight bitterness of the coffee liqueur. You can probably skip this one.

Honestly Speaking

Come for the Double Cheese Burger. The chicken is good, the dessert isn't. The burger alone justifies the visit.
